The extended bonnet design moves the valve stem packing farther away from the cold service to prevent freezing and ensure continued valve operation. This design also makes it easy to insulate the valve to prevent loss of cold energy. The length of the bonnet extension is designed in accordance with Shell MESC SPE 77/200 & SPE 77/209, and BS 6364 unless otherwise specified. The raised backseat positions it just below the stem packing, so when the stem is fully back seated, it will prevent abnormal pressure increases, that can occur in the cavity of the bonnet extension, from impacting the packing and potentially causing damage.
2. Cryogenic Treatment of Main Pressure-Containing Components
